Equality is "not an American value"

So said Dennis Prager, a conservative radio Sprachmeister, before an audience of 3,000 in Minneapolis.

Equality, quoth Prager, is "the primary value of the left," and it's a European value, not an American one.

In refutation, the well-meaning folks at thinkprogress.org remind us of this:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..."

But we know that "men" didn't include "women" in those days--or Blacks, valued at 3/5 of a white person in the US Constitution until the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 and the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868.

Prager is right on the money. Equality is not an American value--and obviously not a conservative one. Why all the shock and surprise?
