Thursday afternoon reading

The Tyee runs a fine takedown of the latest recurrence of the "Obama is a Muslim" meme.

Not that it will make any difference to the 20% 24% of Americans who are frankly stark, staring bonkers, their minds poisoned beyond recovery by virulent racism, still in shock that The Other, born in Africa, not America, has somehow become their President.

It's good to chase these malicious stories to ground, and Steve Burgess has done so. Enjoy!

I don't really think there is that much raw Islamophobia, people are justifiably wary about who is loyal and who is not so loyal to our country now that they're hidden behind a bland exterior that may very well be the same as millions of harmless souls. I mean, if aliens took human form, who would you watch carefully? What if you heard that they only took the human forms of tall blonde women? Then you would be wary of all tall blonde women. It works the same way here. It's not the fault of every individual Muslim, except in the vague general sense that Islam has fallen behind in its responsibility to distance itself from terrorism (there is always that yes but attitude, like yes we condemn terrorism, but not when we're killing Jews, Americans, Christians, conservatives, or soldiers).
